Croatia hosts some of the most prestigious competitions once underwater photography is considered. The latest Mares Photo Marathon Coup has finished its third edition, bringing insight to fascinating submerged empires that lie beneath Cres waters. The island is located in Croatia’s northern seas, neighboring Krk and resembling Hvar due to its longish landmass.

The competition gathered professional scuba photographers from Italy, Germany, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Hungary, Serbia, Switzerland and Croatia. Some of participants arrived a whole week before Mares Photo Marathon begun, wanting to explore the area as well as possible subjects of their images- in most cases being examples of local plant and animal life.

The grand prize went to Slovenian diver Grega Verc, while second place was won by Portugal  participant Rui Bernardo, who also made the best photograph of the Marathon. Third place went to Italy thanks to Fabio Iardino. In addition to standard competition, people across the world could have sent their own works to compete in separate category. About 350 participants applied, coming from 46 different countries of the world.
