In history of Croatia, Fort of Klis had a very vital strategic role. Located between mountain riffs of Kozjak and Mosor, this fortified complex served as a protection from various threats. Of course, the biggest one was of Ottoman Empire, a gigantic state which threatened to change the balance of powers on European continent. Its borders were just a few miles away from Fort of Klis, and many times, the fate of Croatia was based on the outcome of battles for this construction.
This so-called shield of Croatia was also the heart of Uskoks, notable warriors of Dalmatian region. They were very successful in fighting the Turkish invaders, but fundamentally had to retreat from fort of Klis in 16th century. Time has passed, and in contemporary times, this ancient building is a proof of Croatian determination to preserve its presence, culture and identity on the nation’s territories.
