Yesterday was an important holiday in Croatia, as the nation collectively celebrated Velika Gospa, known in the west as Assumption of Mary. It is a day dedicated to Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, who is believed to be physically accepted to heaven. The story of her assumption does not appear in canonical writings of the Bible, but is a part of traditional belief system of Catholics and several other Christian groups.
The celebrations include exposure of Virgin Mary statues and paintings, as well as religious gatherings and processions. Musical concerts usually accompany Mass meetings, and the whole atmosphere is literally mystic, even to those who do not share the Christian faith.
In Dubrovnik, it is a custom to have a procession through city streets, which includes ritual blessings of the harbored vessels. This is precisely the time when this photo was taken by our reporter Tonci Plazibat.
